Fantasy Football 12-team PPR mock draft recap: Drafting RB with the first three picks and what to expect (2)

In a 12-team, PPR league where you start three receivers and a flex, do you want to lean heavily on running backs when building your roster? Two managers in this mock draft did just that.

Jake Grogins at No. 1 overall went RB-RB-RB with his first three picks with Christian McCaffrey, James Cook, and De'Von Achane. Clearly, those three guys are awesome, and Jake can play all of them. But what about his receivers?

His top three guys are solid with DeVonta Smith, Stefon Diggs, and Jayden Reed, and he has Marquise Brown and Jordan Addison on the bench. He also managed to get Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback and Dallas Goedert at tight end, and he has reserve running backs in Jaylen Warren and Antonio Gibson.

I like this team, although I probably would have drafted Chris Godwin or Terry McLaurin in Round 7 instead of Warren. But Jake built a solid roster doing something somewhat unconventional this season.

Tommy Tran also started his team from the No. 8 spot going RB-RB with Jonathan Taylor and Derrick Henry, and he drafted Sam LaPorta in Round 3. Tommy drafted George Pickens in Round 4 and Tank Dell in Round 5, but he didn't make receiver a huge priority because his next two picks were Kyler Murray and Najee Harris.

From there, Tommy loaded up at receiver with Xavier Worthy, Keon Coleman, Josh Palmer, Tyler Lockett, Gabe Davis, and Brandin Cooks with six of his final seven picks. Tommy had a plan, and it seems like he executed it well, especially if three of these receivers support his running backs, quarterback, and tight end.

I had the No. 12 overall pick, and I was more running back heavy than usual. My first two picks were Saquon Barkley and Puka Nacua, and I got good value on Travis Kelce in Round 3. DK Metcalf, Amari Cooper, and Anthony Richardson were my next three picks, but then I drafted three running backs in a row with Brian Robinson Jr., Tyjae Spears, and Rico Dowdle.

I usually prefer a receiver in the flex spot, but I'd lean toward Spears or Dowdle in that role right now. That said, I still wanted to build up my receiving corps, so my next four picks were Rome Odunze, Rashid Shaheed, Jakobi Meyers, and Darnell Mooney.

My preference would be a stronger receiving corps on this roster. But I have enough talent there to go with Richardson, Kelce, and a solid group of running backs to make this a competitive team.

As a reference point for this mock draft, all touchdowns are worth six points, and we award one point for every 10 yards rushing and receiving and one point for every 25 yards passing. We also award one point for every reception. We feature a starting lineup of QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE and FLEX (RB/WR/TE) with six reserves for a 14-round draft.

Fantasy Football 12-team PPR mock draft recap: Drafting RB with the first three picks and what to expect (2024)

FAQs

Who should be the 1st pick in fantasy football? ›

Round 1, Picks 1-12: Draft a wide receiver

Anyone with the top overall pick should take Christian McCaffrey with little hesitation. He scored over 100 more PPR points than any other running back last season and has the perfect combination of talent, opportunity and situation.

Who is the best number 3 pick in fantasy football PPR? ›

Top Target: Alvin Kamara

Kamara finished third in fantasy points per game this season despite averaging less than 4.0 yards per carry.

What positions to draft first in PPR fantasy football? ›

In 12-Team Half-PPR, the best draft position is pick No. 1 or 2. Drafting optimally from the No. 1 or 2 spot in 12-team half-PPR drafts lands you on the same team through six rounds -- and a whopping 328.6 3D Value points.

How do you pick who goes first in fantasy draft? ›

Play the No. 1 fantasy game

This edition covers 10-team leagues. For each draft slot, you'll find a "players unlocked" section, which indicates the earliest pick at which you should consider the player listed. All references to fantasy points are for PPR scoring unless otherwise noted.

Should my first fantasy pick be a QB? ›

I recommend dedicating (at least) one of your first four picks to either a QB or TE. Consider Travis Kelce, Sam LaPorta, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes or Jalen Hurts in the third round, or Lamar Jackson, Trey McBride, Mark Andrews or Dalton Kincaid in the fourth. ... stuff your bench with league-winning upside.

Who to draft first in fantasy football in 2024? ›

4-Round, 10-Team PPR Mock Draft
  • Round 1. Christian McCaffrey, RB, SF. CeeDee Lamb, WR, DAL.
  • Round 2. Jonathan Taylor, RB, IND. Garrett Wilson, WR, NYJ.

Who to draft with pick 3? ›

Draft Slot 3

Round 1 (Pick 3): Determining your comfort level with Lamb's holdout should drive this decision, as he's one of only 18 players in history (and just three wide receivers) to reach the 400-point plateau, underscoring his similar -- if not equal -- potential to that of Hill.

Who do I take with the 3rd pick? ›

Round 1, Pick 3: Draft a wide receiver

The strategy at this pick is simply to take the best wide receiver. Star running back Christian McCaffrey is likely off the board, and it's a little too early to select Bijan Robinson or Breece Hall.

What position is best to draft in the first round? ›

The value at the end of the first round is at wide receiver. The running backs who are likely available include Jonathan Taylor, Jahmyr Gibbs and Saquon Barkley, but all three players have risk. Picking wide receivers has generally been safer, and there will still be quality running backs in later rounds.

What positions to draft first in espn fantasy football? ›

It has taken some time, but wide receiver has officially overtaken running back as the priority position. That's evidenced by ADP trends in recent seasons. Five years ago (2020), 10 of the first 12 picks (and 14 of the top 20) were running backs.

Who to draft with a 4th pick in fantasy football? ›

ADP suggests Breece Hall, Ja'Marr Chase, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Justin Jefferson, or Bijan Robinson are the best choices at the 4th pick.

Should I draft a RB or WR first in fantasy? ›

That said, if it's potentially position-leading upside you desire at running back, spending one of your first two picks on RBs was much more likely to result in success: 31% of running backs selected in the top two rounds finished top five at the position in scoring.

What is the best round to draft a QB in fantasy football? ›

Round 3, Pick 29: Draft a quarterback

A quarterback is the ideal pick at the start of Round 3. These perfect draft articles constantly mentioned Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts at the end of Round 2 last season, and they ended up finishing first and second in fantasy points at the position.

What should I prioritize in fantasy draft? ›

Many fantasy football experts recommend prioritizing running backs in the draft's early rounds. Running backs tend to earn many fantasy points and have a higher risk of injury, making them valuable commodities. Some of the top running backs for 2024 include Christian McCaffrey, Breece Hall, and Bijan Robinson.

What is 1.01 in fantasy football? ›

As we don't know where rookies will land, most leagues will have a separate rookie draft a few months after the start-up draft. Instead, rookie picks are included in the start-up, so instead of choosing a player, you select the pick (i.e. 1.01).

How to pick a good fantasy football team? ›

Find out the budget for selecting your team or squad. Split this budget for each area of your team – Goalkeeper/Defence, Midfield and Forwards. Using the games player list and the guides and selection stats on this site, make a shortlist of players with their values.

What are the positions in fantasy football? ›

What positions make up a fantasy football team? A fantasy football team consists of one quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, one tight end, one flex, one kicker, and a team defense/special teams.

How to do fantasy football draft? ›

A Standard draft follows a "snake" drafting order. This means that once each team makes a pick, the draft order is reversed in the next round. Each team drafts a player when they are on the clock. In a Salary Cap draft, players are nominated in a "linear" order.
